Spray stencils from a 3D printer

Stencils printed to order,
not cut by hand.

Your artwork becomes a reusable PETG stencil. You send the file, we handle the build and the printing. From a single piece, ready in two to three working days, with collection in Berlin or shipping across Germany and the EU.

Which artwork works

Almost all of it, though some pieces need adapting, and we do that with you beforehand rather than surprising you afterwards.

What matters most are the islands: the parts of your artwork that float free, such as the middle of an O, the dot on an i, the eye in a face. With nothing holding them, they simply fall out of the stencil. We add fine bridges for those, placed so that they read as part of the drawing rather than as a mistake.

Lines want to be at least 1.5 to 2 mm wide, and so do the gaps between them. Below that the paint bleeds together and the artwork closes up. For text that means fine typefaces get tight under roughly 3 cm of letter height, while heavier weights work considerably smaller.

Working from a photo? Not a problem. We turn a photograph or a hand drawing into a sprayable outline and send you a preview first, so you can see where the bridges sit and how far the artwork has been simplified.

From file to stencil

  1. You send your artworkSVG, PDF, AI or EPS are ideal. A sharp JPG or PNG, a photo of your drawing, or simply a description will do just as well.
  2. We check it and build itWe place the bridges, check line widths and minimum gaps, and send you a preview of the stencil along with a price, usually the same day.
  3. You approve itNothing goes to the printer until you say yes.
  4. Printing and deliveryTwo to three working days to make, then packed flat and sent by DHL. Within Berlin, collection or a courier is available.

Large formats and several colours

Above 30 × 30 cm we split the artwork into sections that interlock through registration marks. You line the parts up on the wall, tape them down and spray in a single pass. Formats of several metres are possible this way, with no seam showing in the image.

For artwork in more than one colour we make one stencil per colour, all carrying the same registration marks in the same place. You spray layer by layer and the alignment takes care of itself, with nothing to measure. Two or three layers is the usual case. More is possible, though it becomes demanding to spray.

Shipping across Germany

Stencils are flat and light, so we send them in a box rather than a tube, with nothing rolled or folded. Two to three working days to make, then one to two working days with DHL inside Germany. Shipping into the EU takes correspondingly longer.

If there is a date behind the order, a campaign, an event or a shoot, tell us the day. We work backwards from it and tell you plainly whether it is achievable, rather than leaving you to hope.

In Berlin you are welcome to collect, or to have it couriered to you the same day.

What it costs

The price comes down to three things: size, quantity, and how much work the file still needs. A 120 mm stencil with a print-ready vector file comes to 39 euros. That is an indicative price. The dimensions, the material thickness and the geometry of the design move it up or down.

Your price in a few clicks. Set the size, the material and the state of your file in the price calculator and an estimate appears straight away. It becomes binding with the quote, which you will usually have the same working day.

Common questions

How many times can I use a stencil?

As long as it stays clean. You wipe it down with a cloth and a little cleaner after spraying and it is ready to go again. Dozens of uses from the same stencil is normal.

How long it lasts comes down mostly to the paint you work with. Water-based and ordinary acrylic sprays are no trouble at all. Chrome, metallic and some neon lacquers carry harsher solvents and take a little more out of the plastic with every use. Wiping it down while the paint is still fresh is always kinder than scraping it off once it has dried. Tell us what you spray with and we will pick the right thickness.

Which file should I send?

A vector file is best, as SVG, PDF, AI or EPS, because it turns straight into a clean outline. A high-resolution JPG or PNG works too and we convert it for you. A hand drawing photographed on your phone is a perfectly good starting point.

Can I get my lettering as a stencil?

Yes. With text we pay particular attention to the counters inside letters such as O, A, R and e, which have to be held in place by bridges. Below roughly 3 cm of letter height we would suggest a heavier weight, so that the outline stays open when you spray.

Is this legal?

The stencil itself is a tool, and entirely legal. Where you use it is a question of permission. On your own property, on canvas, textile, wood, or on walls that have been released for painting, there is nothing to sort out. In public space it depends on what the owner or the city allows. We make the tool; the decision and the responsibility for using it are yours.

Does it work on textile, or for screen printing?

Textile, yes. With textile spray paint and something underneath, our stencils work well, including for small runs of shirts or tote bags. Screen printing works differently and needs a screen rather than a stencil. Tell us what you have in mind and we will tell you honestly whether we are the right tool for the job.
